Differed from earlier vans ducket on right hand side. The origins of these characteristic vehicles can be traced to a class of SE&CR brake vans first introduced in 1918, the underframe design of which (as modified in 1923), was used for the standard SR 25ton van introduced in 1928. The SE&CR vehicles mentioned had normal full length bodies but these were thought unnecessarily large for the accommodation of one man, and therefore an entirely new design was evolved which while providing adequately for the guard was both cheap and easy to produce. Duckets were provided as this feature was already a standard fitting on former LSWR main line vans. Construction of the class, known as to the staff as "Pillboxes" continued for over 20 years until production ceased in October 1948.
